The Deep is artistic collaboration at its finest -- Rivers Solomon drew incredible inspiration from clipping.'s source material and turned it into something totally unique and wonderful. Solomon's world is so carefully and completely crafted that The Deep offers an immersive reading experience into an underwater community of wajinru, mercreatures descended from drowned enslaved African women, and Yetu, their historian, who is tasked with containing all of their intergenerational trauma so that her people can maintain a blissfully ignorant existence. All of Solomon's characters feel so full of life that you can't help but feel sympathetic to their causes. Reading like a fantastically updated version of The Giver, this novella is sure to become an Afrofuturist classic, right next to the works of Octavia Butler in the history books.
