“The Deep” is a curious look into the mysterious and fantastic world of the water below us. While River Solomon has many very interesting ideas, it will be tough to bring them to fruition and to explain them to readers. These concepts- such as the winjenru forgetting everything passed a week before- may make for some confusing plot point if they are not explained in a way the readers can understand.

Solomon is a good writer but may lack in plot and character depth. From the first excerpt it is hard to tell what the plot is going to be and where this story will be going. As well, they characters that Solomon has made have a sense of forced depth to them. These characters are explained by the author rather than shown by their actions and the story.

Over all, it was an enjoyable read and I would, based off of this short excerpt, recommend this book to young adult fantasy readers.
