The Deep is a hauntingly beautiful story that I’m still trying to process and understand. It tells the story of the wajinru, the water-dwelling descendants of African pregnant slave women, whose past is too traumatic to remember regularly, except for by one, the historian, Yetu. Once a year Yetu shares the rememberings with the entire wajinru. This burden, these traumas of her people continue to weigh on her. The way her trauma is written is so vivid right from the get go...

“It was a matter of reconnecting her brain to her body and lowering the shields she put in place in her mind to protect herself. As she focused, the world came in.”

And so Yetu flees to the surface to escape the memories and her responsibilities, and discover so much. This book... it will be so hard yet so beautiful!
