Deep beneath the ocean live the Wajinri – a creature reminiscent of mermaids born from the pregnant African woman thrown overboard from slave ships. The Deep follows Yetu, the Historian and keeper of memories for her people. Overwhelmed by the burdensome memories of generations, Yetu makes a desperate attempt to be her own person. But can you truly be something without your roots?

Solomon places an interesting historical spin on a traditional mythological creature based on song lyrics, interestingly enough. Do not be mistaken – this is not a historical book. It is a quick read that feels more like an exploratory text than a well-polished novel, but I found myself intrigued none the less. With themes of individual vs collective purpose, purpose despite loss, and the worth of traumatic memories, The Deep is certainly an interesting use of an afternoon.
