The Deep is a novella, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in depth. The Deep tells the story of an underwater dwelling people whose past and memories are kept inside by a single historian. While the people remain blissful and unaware, the historian is being ripped apart by the trauma of the past. She journeys to the surface to escape, and discovers the world her people left behind.

This book was dark, haunting, devastating, and beautiful. It explores the generational trauma caused by the transatlantic slave trade and the horrors experienced during the crossing. Solomon's writing is entrancing. They are able to fit so much into this little novella! While a haunting tale of merpeople sounds great, where this book really hooked me was watching the historian and people process and grieve the collective trauma of their past. It is a book I will think about for years to come.
