I was immediately drawn in by the haunting cover of The Deep, which envisions a world where slaves thrown overboard now live as mermaids. I love this idea that the survivors of something so horrific and callous as being treated as cargo to be used, abused, or abandoned to the ocean, could rise up to create a mystical underwater society.
