From what I've read of this book, I believe that it will be a fun, compelling read that will be hard to put down.

It's something that I'd read with my teenage son so that we can discuss impressions and notions that we might find.

The characters being descendants of African women who were supposed to have drowned when tossed overboard is a story that gives life to Black women who are under constant attack. It says what we already know: Black women are strong, resilient, and make the best of even the worst situations.

I also believe that it's timely because of all the "whitelash" from a Black actress portraying the role of Ariel in "The Little Mermaid". African history has shown that the mermaid is deeply embedded in the culture and rings throughout the diaspora.
