I loved the innovative idea for this book, that African women intended to be slaves who were thrown overboard didn't die but created their own society under the ocean. The concept of of using shared memories to ensure their future is intriguing to me, since studies are starting to show that trauma can psychologically imprint on future generations. I especially liked the character of Yetu, since she holds the powerful memories that her people depend upon for survival, but she is also so vulnerable and seems to be barely holding on herself. I want to find out more about Yetu and her people, their past and future.

The illustration on the book makes me think of a mermaid, aligning with the story of how this society transformed horrors into beauty without forgetting about their painful past.
