I thought that the beginning was rather abrupt. It didn't give much background details, it just started right away with a dialogue/conversation with random characters. On the other hand, though, I really liked the book cover's design and how it put the main "creature" in the center of the cover.
What I liked about the story though, is that it describes the people subtly as not being completely human but half-creature. To me, the story seems interesting and would make me want to continue reading it...
