Nope. Just nope. Apparently this story is supposed to be about descendants of slaves thrown overboard on ships traveling the ocean. The idea that they could somehow stay alive and turn into mermaids is weird. That they choose to forget their past and make one person remember it to remind them once a year so they can forget again three days later is cruel. The main character is a dreamy, floaty character losing herself because of this responsibility. Her mother is mean and demanding. There is absolutely nothing about this book that makes me want to read any further.
