This is a fantasy novel about a hidden civility of Sirens and Mermen built by African American slaves as they escaped/fell down the boats bringing them to the United States.
The writing starts slowly and it would have taken a while to understand the plot if I had not read the synopsis before. I believe that the author with this novel wanted to create a metaphor for the condition of African American today, specifically their creation of a distinct society and culture.
Fantasy novels are not my favorite, however I would be interested in reading this book to see how this metaphor is developed by the author.
