Historical fiction is a genre I'm trying to explore more so I was very excited to receive a review copy of this. I was not disappointed.

It's refreshing to see a book centering on a wealthy Black family, especially a historical one. One that still addresses issues of racism, colorism, sexism, and classism without it being entirely about horrible things happening.

Helen was my favorite character, I think, though all of the girls were delightful. The secondary characters were all also well fleshed-out. Both the Tremaine and Davenport parents, for example, felt like whole characters, as did all of the suitors. Even minor characters felt real and like they added to the story and never detracted from it.

I think my only real complaint is that I wish this were not the first book but told the whole story! I want to know how things are going to work out, especially for Amy-Rose on her new adventure.
