This was a sweet book following four black girls in the 1920s, three of whom are fantastically rich. They all fall in love with guys who are off limits but also struggle with the idea of how to temper their dreams with society's expectations. The result is a relaxing and hard to put down read.
I will admit that certain characters—Ruby's parents, Washington DeWight, John—needed a little more fleshing out. They served as plot devices rather than true characters. But as this is a debut, I'm willing to forgive that.
I love the fact that this was originally written as a NaNoWriMo. :)
I also enjoyed the new view of the 1920s. We rarely get to hear about black people doing anything but suffering or overcoming their suffering, so it was nice to see them enjoy themselves. The same goes for historical fiction. I only ever seem to read about ancient tragedies. This was lighthearted, a genuinely fun read. I'll be looking forward to the next book.
