This was a strong first novel which will hopefully have more to come. This novel focuses mainly on the Davenport siblings and their friends and love interests. Born into a wealthy Chicago family to a father who was born a slave the siblings have more than the usual pressure to be successful and marry well. This story is a tangled web of friends and suitors, secrets and family obligations. The Davenports has quite a few narrators and stories playing out at the same time but all the charters are well fleshed out with their own goals and holes and struggles. The author did a really great job of presenting a diverse group of characters, perspectives and experiences of of African Americans living in Chicago in the early 1900’s in one cohesive story. She did a great job of establishing the world and I can’t wait to see how she continues all their stories.
