The Davenports are a very unique family for their location and time period. Each main character has their own distinct personality and issues because of it. Even though the book is narrated from multiple points of view, I felt it added to the overall story, rather than create confusion. I enjoyed the classic high society romance from a Black perspective. I appreciated the book taking place in Chicago rather than England like many others in similar genres. The racial and feminist issues presented gave an extra layer to the romances throughout the story. While some aspects of the plot were predictable, it ended in an unexpected cliffhanger. I would highly recommend this book to Young Adults looking for Historical Fiction that is not the typical World War II romance. I became very invested in the characters and am eager for book two!
