The Davenports is the story of a wealthy black family in the early 1900s. It follows Olivia, the oldest Davenport daughter, who is all set to get married until she meets civil rights leader Washington DeWight and they hit it off. Also, there is Helen who is more into fixing cars than finding love, and her brother John. Rounding out the cast is Amy-Rose a maid to the Davenport sisters and Olivia’s best friend Ruby. All these characters are well-written and fascinating to follow. The time period is one that is similar to Bridegerton so if you have seen that show you can kind of picture the clothing and other time period pieces. I found that there was a nice balance of relationships and drama so it really flowed nicely. I think that this is the first book I have read with wealthy black characters in this time period, hopefully, there will be many more like it.
