The story revolves around 4 young women in early 1900's Chicago. First, there are sisters, Olivia and Helen Davenport. Olivia is out in society and searching for a suitable husband. Which she finds in Mr. Jacob Lawrence. But situations lead her to fall for someone else. Someone she isn't sure her parents would accept. Helen is obsessed with mechanics. She loves getting dirty, and doesn't seem to fit in amongst society. Then there is Ruby Tremaine, a friend of the Davenports. She has an unrequited interest in John Davenport, Olivia and Helen's brother. Last, there is Amy-Rose. She is a maid in the Davenport household and grew up alongside Olivia and Helen. She is in love and has big dreams about her future.
What this novel does well is point us in one direction and then pulling us abruptly back. I really thought I knew where the story was headed but, boy, was I surprised! Pretty sure a sequel is in the works or something. This book definitely needs it!
