Marquis does an excellent job of breathing life in early twentieth century Chicago, while creating four women whose lives intersect that all have different dreams. The story doesn't ignore the discrimination that Black people face, or the repercussions of slavery, and yet avoiding making it the focus makes this an even more interesting book.
