Race, class, power, gender - heady topics and a good dose of romance
Told from the perspectives of young Black women in Chicago in the 1910s, this is a neat take on a coming-of-age novel. We hear from the Davenport sisters who come from extreme wealth, their childhood friend/maid, and a girlfriend from another powerful (albeit not as well-to-do) family. Even in the first impression, it's interesting to glean their personalities and the possible growth that we'll see in later chapters as they deal with societal/familial expectations (even as society is changing rapidly), romance, and their own aspirations. There's a lot of potential and, as the author, Krystal Marquis, states in her introduction, this is a part of American history that isn't well-known. I'm excited to see what happens!
