There is not much that I love more than a period piece. This book has the extra benefit of showing a point of view that we never see in these period pieces: the pov of a Black family. The narrator remarks in the first chapter that even though they are Black in the early 20th century, her family still has a lot of privilege. I am very interested to see how the author balances their wealthy privilege with their social disadvantage of being Black during this time period. We get a peek of this balance in the first chapter when the shop attendant assumes the MC is a maid. I am very intrigued by this book.
