I haven't read either of Jennifer Armentrout's Lux series, the original YA or its adult spinoff standalone Obsession. Regardless, I was able to follow / understand the preview of The Darkest Star enough to know that I'm interested in more. The book starts off unassumingly enough. Evie goes to a club with her friend only it's not a typical club. It's one of the few that caters to both humans and Luxen (aliens). Well, Evie picked a good night to visit, or not, because the club gets raided, but luckily the attractive and mysterious Luc helps her escape without being caught.

At first, I was thinking about how long it's been since I've read a YA with the characters in high school and I was thinking about how Luc seemed angsty and moody, just typical of high school boys I've read about in YA before. But then you begin to realize that there's something, for lack of a better word, weird going on around Evie when she goes to the club and afterwards. From that point forward in the preview, all the way to the almost revelatory ending, I was hooked.
