Before I begin this review, I am going to admit that I have not read the original Darkest Minds trilogy, but I did know enough of the premise to be able to easily dive into this book, and honestly, I believe you do not need to read The Darkest Minds in order to easily navigate your way through the Darkest Legacy. The Darkest Legacy starts out five years after the events of the Darkest minds, our protagonist being a girl named Zu who was thirteen during the time of the events of the first book. After escaping the clutches of the corrupt government and finally winning their freedom, Zu is an ambassador and a leader among the PSI; a formal speaker for her people on the changes being made between the government and the PSI in order to form a kind of peace. This all changes when an attack is made on Zu and she is kidnapped, along with two other PSI kids, Roman and Priyanka, and she is framed for the attack and labeled a danger and a fugitive. In this turn of events, everything that Zu has worked for threatens to come crumbling down as she seeks to uncover what is really happening within the corrupt government who still seeks to destroy her kind.
Overall I enjoyed this book, Zu was a strong character who I could relate to in a lot of ways, and I really felt for her cause and everything she went through. The love interest was not the most solid for me, I could care less about Roman, but the world-building, the action, the diverse cast, it all really worked well for me. I did really enjoy Priyanka, I thought she was funny and quirky, and of course, I really loved meeting some characters that were new to me as well, like Vida and Liam and all the cast that I know were kids in the earlier books. I am excited to check out the original series so I can see how a lot of these events came to pass, and how all these characters grew into who they were now. A solid 3.5 stars from me out of five.
