I really would like to read the first in this series, and I'm excited for the movie coming out because Amandla Stenberg is a fab actress, and I'm not sure if I can give a proper first impression just diving in to something so far into the story. So here goes: I will say this book/excerpt doesn't make it easy to understand or get drawn into the narrative. If I hadn't Wiki'ed some of it earlier, I'd be ???? And I found myself not caring about anyone, partly because I wasn't sure what exactly was going on/ partly because the writing was boring or not engaging. I have no connection or entry point for these characters, just a lot of shady cliches... so I guess I need to pick up the first book before I can really say if I like this world or not. I'm putting my first impression rating at a neutral three.
