The author teases the reader in the first chapters of this book. Goldie is accused of something but we’re not certain what it is. It involves a boy and a car but the boy is alive. So why is there so much hatred directed towards her? Why is she at fault when she wasn’t driving the car? Why was she made to sign a non-disclosure agreement form after the event? Is she really guilty or is it assumed that she is?

The questions mount as Goldie rejoins her two best friends, Ava and Imogen. Out of town when the incident occurred, they have no idea what’s happened to her or the torment she suffered at the hands of other students: the whispers, insults, hate speech, etc. She can’t tell them but sooner or later they’re going to find out. With the details of the event hidden, lies will be told to these two women and Goldie won’t be able to correct them.

Even as the author gives us an idyllic picture of small-town life, Goldie’s growing anxiety paints a very different picture. Even though the devastating event is in the past, it won’t leave her alone. So it preys on our minds as well, haunting us like a vengeful ghost.

The first chapters are therefore riveting, making us wonder with every turn of the page what the secret is. We know it’s going to come out but not how, when or who will be telling. The author keeps you on the edge of your seat, biting your lip while inwardly screaming at Goldie to tell what she knows.

Will the truth help or hinder, heal or harm? That’s up to the author and this book is certain to keep its curious bookworms guessing.
