I loved We Are the Brennans and was looking forward to The Connellys of County Down…and Ms. Lange didn’t disappoint!
The Connellys opening scenes take place in a women’s prison in New York. Tara Connelly is about to be released after serving a sentence for drug trafficking. She’ll go home to live with her siblings, Geraldine and Eddie, and Eddie’s son, Conor. The siblings have been on their own since they were young, and have been through many challenges.
And there are more challenges to come! The chapters alternate between the siblings and their individual stories gradually unfold. In between, there’s a second storyline that involves two local police officers, Hank and Brian, and their attempts to build a case against a local drug dealer.
Some aspects were predictable but it was still wonderful to see how their stories played out. The Connellys of County Down is a wonderful portrayal of a family and their struggles. The characters were all well developed and interesting and I want to see what happens to them!
Ms. Lange is developing a wonderful niche of novels about Irish-American families and I look forward to seeing what’s next.
