Fabulous Family Fiction
Thank you so much to @CeladonBooks for complimentary book. These opinions are my own.
I had really enjoyed Tracey Lange's We Are the Brennans, so I was especially excited to read her latest and have a discussion guide for it. I read this as part of the Celadon Reads Together buddy read initiative.
The book focuses on Tara Connelly, starting on the day that she first leaves prison and moves back in with her brother Brian and sister Geraldine. Over time, we get glimpses of the past while Tara struggles with transitioning.
I am grateful to see the transition from prison shown. I hope this kind of book can help increase empathy for those who have served their time and then continue to be punished with challenges in getting a place to work or to live.
The title The Connellys of County Down references fairy tales that their mother used to tell them. She wove stories about how the three siblings all had superpowers, and those stories inspired Tara's own art. I loved how they were woven through and served as a broader metaphor.
This was an incredibly moving book with amazing character development. It kept me guessing and worried and hopeful throughout the book. I felt like I was right with Tara experiencing her feelings.
