While this first look showcased a compassionate portrayal of its characters and has a very interesting starting place with the protagonist finally being released from prison, I just wasn't very into it. The characters didn't really grab me or feel as real or deep as I would like, and I really disliked the cop character, which is especially unfortunate because I think he might be a love interest. There was also one line that mentioned how hard prison was for these women and listed a few things they turned to, such as crying all night or self-harm, but also mentioned that "they were so hungry for intimacy that they turned to each other," which I just felt it was weird to place (if I'm reading this right) same-sex relationships on the same level as again, crying yourself to sleep or self-harm. This might totally just be a trait of the character or something she'll learn through later, and it likely wasn't intended that way, but it was odd enough to put me off this book a little bit. Still, the writing was again pretty solid, and it does a good job of setting up some mystery of how Tara got to the prison in the first place, as well as her relationships with her siblings. I'm sure this book has its strengths and could be a great read for others, but it is probably not my thing.
