A story that starts with a woman being released from prison is different fare for this reader. Tara comes off as being rather ordinary. She’s not too smart but not too stupid either. While she got in because of dealing drugs for a no-good boyfriend, she’s kept her nose clean and managed to stay out of trouble in stir. Good for her.

The image we get of Tara Connelly is that of a tough, no-nonsense woman. She’s trying to get by but she realizes her immediate future is bleak. With a criminal record, she won’t be hired to teach children art, which she loved and what she was doing before her life was derailed. Her sister is disapproving and the sort who wears on your nerves like sandpaper if you’re in her presence for too long. Her brother is a bit of a cipher but you wonder at someone who’s still living with his sister when they’re both grown people.

Tara will likely get by and you hope her life in the future will be short of contention. But you suspect that bad ex-boyfriends, limited prospects and familial tension will make life harder before it gets easier.
