The Companion is compulsively readable, and the further you get into the book the harder it is to put down. This book is categorized at Young Adult and reads like it's told by a teenager but is definitely worth reading as an adult too, especially if you like gothic, suspenseful thriller. After Margot is the only survivor of a car accident that kills the rest of her family, she ends up living in a huge home out in the middle of nowhere, with no technology and as a companion to the family daughter that's borderline comatose. Despite signs that something isn't right, Margot is desperate to be a "good orphan" and contribute so that the family won't send her away. When son Barrett comes home, he becomes a sliver of normalcy for Margot and makes her begin to question her complacency and Laura (the mom) and Agatha's illness. This of course is when the suspense really starts building towards what is an exciting, if not totally unexpected ending. My only beef with the story is really with John, the father, who's constantly not at home and doesn't seem to have a clue what's going on in his home. But other than that this was a perfect mix of teenage aspirations, a little romance and a lot of suspense.
