i really liked the initial concept of the book: the main character goes off to live with a rich family in an eerie, gothic house, and something does not feel right

the author did an amazing job writing Margot's character. Margot had already undergone so much trauma even before moving in with the Suttons. her grief, guilt, and anguish came to life on the pages, and the flashback scenes as well as the moments of grief in the present were absolutely heartbreaking.

also, on a slightly less related note, i LOVED the garden! the descriptions alone, full of whimsical imagery, painted such a lovely picture in my mind (which was a welcome distraction from all of the rest of the eerie goings-on and secrets at the Sutton house).

this was not the first book that i've read from this author, and i am definitely interested in learning about what Alender will be writing next!
