In an age where all we want is to feel safe and in control, The Companion by Katie Alender is here to remind us that there are still shadows where we cannot see.

Margot is lucky. Margot is alive. Having survived a horrible car crash myself people would always say the same to me. But there is a lingering pain, far greater than the physical. And in Margot's case deeply emotional as well, having lost her family- her everything...

So when she is taken in by the Sutton's she feels compelled to be grateful to them. I mean, without them she would still be at a government institution. Right?

It is made clear right away that she is to be a companion to the Sutton's mute daughter, Agatha. The two form a bond that I believe grounds Margot as secrets and shadows lurk toward her.

One thing I would have done was write out the romance. It was a bit distracting to be honest. I believe it was unnecessary. Barrett could have been written out and the story would have been just as well off.

As a YA horror novel, The companion is pretty good. The first thing you should know is that I don't hand out five stars. It would take something pretty incredible to convince me. But I genuinely enjoyed The Companion. It's a shame that I am desensitized to horror. Although, the story did leave me uncomfortable at times, which is fantastic!
