The Companion
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 mini spoiler at the end 🤫

I won this book from @bookishfirst from providing reviews or first thoughts about new books. This was my choice and I was pulled in by the cover. It sounded creepy for sure from the synopsis so I was intrigued. However, that changed once I started reading.

It is a YA thriller where we follow the life of Margot after her family brutally dies in car crash. She is placed in an orphanage and then get adopted by an old family friend to be their ill daughters companion. What could go wrong?

I was expecting a full on horror and terror. Also was expecting goosebumps after reading and better reveal, but I did not get any of that. It was a slow build for me where I caught myself putting it down a lot. It was a longer book than I expected for thought it needed. The quick romance was cute but not what I expected in a thriller novel.

I did enjoy Margot as a character. In my opinion, she is smart and her snarky humor actually made me smile at times. The story was dark and enjoyed the creepiness of it. Staying in the mansion or on the grounds gave the creepy vibe. I think cause it was long and dragged out it was hard for me to read. The ending however was surprising. With about 100 pages left I guessed what was going on. I think I have a response as to why/how it happened.....think Sharp Objects or Darling Rose Gold.
