I've only recently gotten into thriller novels and YA thrillers have been such a great stepping stone into this genre. The Companion especially so. After the loss of her family, Margot is taken to live with the Suttons at their family estate. There, she is expected to be the companion of Agatha, their sickly daughter. However, nothing at the estate is what it seems and Margot is left fighting for her life.

Katie Alender is a talented writer. I think her style in The Companion really works well with the YA genre. It has spooky tones, but at the same time gives us little bits of wit every now and then. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters, especially Margot and her complexities. The plot flowed really well and it was a thoroughly entertaining read. I kind of guessed what was happening half way through, but the book and writing still kept my interest so I wasn't really bothered by it.

I had only a few complaints. The relationship between Margot and Barrett seemed a bit forced. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a good romance and such. But it seemed to move very quickly. I understand the need for it plot-wise, but it still felt rushed all the same. Additionally, I was still left with some questions. Although, I don't think that really is detrimental to the book. If anything, it makes it seem spookier. However, my curious mind likes answers!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I read it in a day (which is saying something because it's not a thin book). I'm definitely going to find more novels by this author.
