The Companion was such a perfect, creepy, atmospheric book for this fall! Margot is an orphan suffering major PTSD after the death of the rest of her family in a tragic car accident. She is plucked from her foster home quite unexpectedly and swept away to a remote mansion owned by an acquaintance of her father whom she has never met. The family wants to take her in on the condition that she become the "companion" of their teenage daughter, who suffers from a mysterious condition that keeps her home and prevents her from speaking. Not long after Margot begins life at the mansion, it becomes clear that things around the mansion are not quite as they seem. I loved the way the author gave the house and garden such strong personalities, almost as if they were characters in the story. Margot's unreliability as a narrator kept me guessing for a while, wondering if all of the mysteries could be explained away by Margot's memory and mental health conditions. I admit that I did guess some components of the story before they were revealed by the author, but it didn't make me enjoy the book any less. The unlikely friendships that build up between Margot and Agatha and Barrett were a real bonus. I will definitely be recommending this to my teenage students and buying several copies for my library.
