The Companion by Katie Alender strikes me as a slow burn thriller. Within the first couple of chapters, the reader is introduced to the narrator and learns of Margot's sad backstory as the only survivor of an automobile crash. Margot is taken away from the orphanage and selected by a strange household to be a companion/friend to a mysterious girl. The premise seems a bit formulaic, and the beginning didn't capture my interest right away. I also found the writing to be a bit clunky, although I'm not sure how much of that is the author's writing style and how much of it is the narrator's (a child? teenager?) voice. Although, looking through the other reviews that pretty much rave "wow" over and over again, it seems like I'm mostly the odd duck out.
