Sad, funny, mysterious, gothic... what's not to like?

The main character, Margaret/Margot, is very likable. Even though her family has just died, she is sarcastically funny. She moves from a home for girls to a gothic setting of a mansion in the middle of nowhere with a family that includes a daughter, Agatha, who has suddenly become catatonic within the last year. Oh, and no cell phone coverage, either. Why is Agatha catatonic? Is it really from a bacterial illness affecting her brain? I have a feeling not.

The first four chapters definitely have piqued my interest and make me want to know more.
