The story starts out with the main character Sylvia Wren who has a secret, and is running away from her past. The story then flashes back almost for the rest of the book until the very end The story goes back to Connecticut 1950 to tell the story of a family who's business is the selling of Chapel rifles. The family has 6 daughters all with names of flowers. Their mother seems to be lost in a dream world of ghosts and isn't able to connect with her family.

This book was dark, it was haunting, there was a lot of ghosts and hidden pasts. It reminded me a lot of 19th century gothic classic novels such as "Withering Heights" or any of the feminist driven Bronte sisters. There was a sprinkling of Georgia O'Keefe influence and a strong feminist vein running throughout the story.

I enjoyed the symbolism and the duality of the firearms vs the flowers. I did think the story was a bit long, but I did appreciate all the characters of the sisters and what they each brought to the story.
