I have a lot of feelings about The Cherry Robbers, Sarai Walker's novel centered on the six daughters of the heir to the "Chapel" gun dynasty. Their father is aloof and their mother beset by ghosts. Beautifully written, at turns hilarious yet heartbreaking. I loved the closeness of the Chapel sisters, loved their names, their fascination with art and how they deal with their isolation. Tragedy upon tragedy befall these women and yet Walker's overall message appears hopeful and of feminist promise. I think my favorite part was the last few section, which focuses on Sylvia, what she made of her life after running, and coming to terms with the ghosts of her sisters. I was unaware of the inspiration behind their mother, Belinda, (vis a vis Sarah Winchester) who is haunted by the souls of people she believes were killed by the Chapel weapons. Hard to read, at times, but also un-put-downable. Love the source of the title, too, and the cover. Highly recommend!
