Amy Rose Capetta's The Brilliant Death intrigued me from the start with its mafia elements, fantasy premise, and lyrical writing. The story centers around the very charismatic and likable Teo di Sangro, who must save her family from the ruthless Capo. Teo has kept her magic a secret from her family but now she must find a way to use it with the help of the mysterious Cielo, who she soon becomes close with.

I loved the focus on Teo's understanding and acceptance of herself. Cielo was a lovely, compelling character as well. Their interactions are the heart of the story. With twists and revelations, The Brilliant Death is an enjoyable, well-written YA fantasy novel with a strong message about identity.
