I went into The Brilliant Death hoping to enjoy it because the summary suggested it has some of my favorite things: mafia, magic and a gender fluid character. And I was not disappointed. The prologue immediately pulled me in with an opening that was both unique and perfectly dark. The bits of setting revealed in these opening chapters only makes me more curious what the Palazzo and Amalia will be like and I cannot wait to travel there.

Teodora’s seemingly sentient magic feels new and exciting, especially since it seems to have a will of its own. I can already sense the trouble it’s going to cause, but it will likely be the best kinds of trouble. And I hope to see more of Luca’s science contrasting with her magic. I’m a sucker for magic versus science.
And then there’s the mysterious stranger, who I can only assume is Cielo. What makes Cielo different from her? Is it simply the knowledge Teodora keeps mentioning she needs?

When I reached the end of the preview I tried to turn the page for more because I was so into the story. The cover is simple but beautiful. The gold/orange immediately catches my eye and the contrast of the white feather and the black bird at the crossguard go well together. I can’t wait until this comes out.
