I didn’t know anything about the traveling librarians that brought books and literature to the hill people of Kentucky. I also knew very little of the Blue people of Kentucky. This book goes into perfect detail on both of these topics, teaching and entertaining me simultaneously.

Cussy Mary is a Blue, seemingly the last of her kind. Her parents were also blue, but her mother died years ago, leaving her with her father. He’s a coal miner, and the book also describes the harsh lifestyle of those with that employment too.

This book covers so many topics: racism, poverty, love, friendship and family are a few of the big ones. You fall in love with Cussy and her huge heart. She has so little, but always thinks of others first. You truly realize how much she, and the other librarians sacrificed, to help their patrons.

This book was a four of five stars read for me! Highly recommend!
