The story of "Bluet", a hill girl afflicted with a disease causing her skin to have a blue appearance, which meant in the south she lived the life of a "colored person". Did this stop Bluet? Nope. This is a story of courage, strength and determination all wrapped up in love, service and determination. I found story rich in details of a time and culture where life was often unfair and often downright hard. The author created complex multidimensional characters that made reading this book enjoyable. I could feel the emotions that Bluet experienced on her journey thanks to the care and details the author chose to include. As a lifelong reader, I found it interesting and surprising to read a story about this Packhorse program that I hadn't even heard about and the way that beloved books and libraries enriched the lives of so many that had so little.
