I always knew that librarians were superheroes, but the Pack Horse librarians of the Great Depression are incredible! The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek gives insight into the time period, the rural mountains of Kentucky and the Blue People of the area by following the life and experiences of Cussy (Bluet). The story follows the flow of a somewhat predictable movie with things building to a climax and then ending fairly quickly. It felt like some big issues were touched upon (unionization of coal miners, race/discrimination by whites against Black and Blue people, gender roles/women working, divide between urban and rural, ethics in science/medicine), but not closely examined. It would've been hard to delve deeply into any of those, but because the story stayed on a superficial level, Cussy and the other characters were largely two-dimensional and somewhat simplistic. It's still an interesting story and it did make me curious to learn more about the Pack Horse Library Project - so it does illuminate a part of the New Deal that I didn't learn in my history books and stories like The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek do highlight the impact and significance of books and literacy.
