I listened to this book via an audio book. I will start off by saying the narrator's voice fit the main character very well. Cussy Mary Carter was a strong and independent woman who had convictions and stood up for them in her own ways. She saw the importance of literacy and also providing for her family.

This book brings to light how discrimination comes in all forms and just how disgusting it is. But if one person does the right thing, there is a ripple effect of change.

Many personalities were brought to life so beautifully in this story. Even the parts that were disturbing needed to be told so that we do not forget where we do not want to return as a nation.

I loved this story, I felt like it was well written and I wish it could have gone on.
