This book was AMAZING! Cussy Mary is a fantastic character that leaves you wanting to saddle a horse and join the Pack Horse Library initiative. This is an excellent historical fiction that will pull you in even if you're not big on the genre.

As a "Bluet" in the foothills of Kentucky, Cussy isn't well received by much of her small town because of the color of her skin. Her duty to deliver library books and, in some cases, help her neighbors learn to read was her highest honor. She was thoughtful in what she picked out for who and tried to fill requests as best as she could. This dedication had won her a handful of friends in an otherwise hostile town.

Cussy's story is hard to read at times. In rural 1936, women's and racial equality didn't really exist. Medicine was hard to come by and the medical world could be crude and unethical. There were other moments, however, that were triumphant for Cussy and those she cared about.

I cried some and laughed some and learned some. I think that's exactly what Cussy aimed to do delivering all those books to her patrons!
