Cussy is not only a pack horse librarian, but she is also the last of her kind- a blue skin. Her dad says this inherited skin color which also shows in her lips, fingers, and toes, comes from her grandfather who immigrated from Cussy, France.
Cussy's mother recently passed away, and her father is determined to find her a husband. She is their only child and is determined to never marry so she can continue her work as a pack horse librarian. But her dad, who works night shifts loading coal, insists Cussy marries so she'll have someone to take care of her when he passes on. Her dad finally finds her a husband who will accept her as a wife along with her dowry of 10 acres of land and a little cash. The marriage ends when her husband passes away in the marriage bed during the first day or two as a couple but only after he has physically and mentally abused her. Cussy moves home with her dad and resumes her job that's funded under Pres. Roosevelt's WPA program.
I have to add that I have a distant cousin, Alma Amburgey, who was one of the original pack horse librarians in rural Knot County, KY. I find her story and other stories about these librarians so interesting!
