Nineteen year old Cussy got a job as a traveling librarian in the hills of Kentucky as a result of FDR's New Deal. She loves being the Book Woman and delivering books to the hill people. Cussy is also a Blue person; for some reason her skin is tinted blue. Her grandfather came from France with blue skin, and the trait has been passed down through generations. She is thought less of because of her blue skin. Being a traveling librarian is fulfilling to her- though her Pa wants her to marry so he can rest easy, knowing she will be taken care of. I liked the beginning of this book. There are a number of fleshed out characters and glimpses into some relationships that Cussy has- both with her Pa and with one of the young women, Angeline, that received books. I am eager to read more of Cussy's story- she is very likable and both her job and this glimpse into history is fascinating!
