I really enjoyed the excerpt of The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson. 19 year old Blue-skinned, Cussy, defies social norms, travelling by mule, faithfully delivering books to the impoverished hill people of Eastern Kentucky. She is a lonely young woman, but she finds hope, inspiration and independence bringing books to these poor communities. I loved the way this author writes, and I was very invested in Cussy, her pa, and the quirky, charming characters on her route. Even her relationship with her old mule was precious. There is hardship, poverty, ignorance and cruelty, but Cussy is a shining light in the darkness, and I can’t wait to learn more about her.
