Cussy is a young woman growing up in 1930's Kentucky and doesn't have a lot going for her - no money, no mother and unique genetic quirk that makes her skin blue. The only thing she truly loves is her job as a book woman, delivering books to the locals. While the language is very appropriate to the region and time period, it grated on my nerves pretty quickly, and it made me more than a little sick to my stomach how little Cussy and the other people she knew had to live for. Maybe if I was in a different place I would be ready to take on a book that could be challenging but possibly inspiring, but this just turns me off right now.
