Intriguing Premise

I was very intrigued by the premise of this book - a kind of mystical realism surrounding a librarian to whom books speak.

However, even after 50 pages, and I understand that stories need to build setting and character, I did not feel that I had settled into the story. I am certain that part of this has to do with the glimpse of younger characters whose ages shift to adults after a single chapter. I was surprised to find character inconsistencies within these glimpses between the child and adult characters. Their adult situations did not seem to coincide with their younger versions and that may have to do with the years in between that were cut out.

I also felt as though the author was doing too much telling and not enough showing in her narrative.

Still, there was enough intrigue and conflict established that I would definitely read on to find out what happens next.
